Workshop teaches culture differences to those working with poverty

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Bridges Out of Poverty workshop, designed to help community officials who work with those in financial need, will take place Sept. 14-16 at the Holiday Inn Select City Center in downtown Lafayette, Ind.

Bridges Out of Poverty will deal with the impact of economic class on individuals and communities. The workshop will provide the opportunity to network and hear about the positive work others are doing, encouraging partnerships and community efforts to address issues that impact and result from poverty.

"We want people to increase awareness of the culture of poverty rather than the effects of poverty and increase their knowledge and skills to support individuals as they move from poverty into stable self-sufficiency," said Aadron Rausch, state Extension specialist and community systemwide response coordinator.

"This workshop will provide an incredible amount of information that would be beneficial in the workplace," Rausch said. "There will be an emphasis on skills needed to increase awareness and improve outreach services."

Philip DeVol, certified chemical dependence counselor and certified prevention specialist, of Marengo, Ohio, is co-author of "Bridges Out of Poverty: Strategies for Professionals and Communities" and "The Complete Guide to Elementary Student Assistance Programs." He consults for Ruby Payne, an internationally known speaker, consultant and educator. DeVol was the director of an outpatient chemical dependency treatment center for 19 years and consults and trains on the issues of poverty, collaboration and design of adolescent treatment programs.

The workshop is geared to individuals, such as government officials, educators, police officers, job program workers, family and children service providers, county health department officials, and those who work for faith-based organizations, who work with and train others from different socioeconomic classes.

Those who sign up for the workshop by July 1 will pay a reduced fee of $125. Regular registration is $155, due by Aug. 2. The registration fee for Extension educators is $100, which also is due by Aug. 2. The fee includes the "Bridges Out of Poverty" book, workshop materials, and two lunches and one dinner. The workshop will be limited to 200 people.

A copy of the workshop brochure and registration form is available online at https://www.four-h.purdue.edu/csr/downloads.html. The registration can be mailed to the address given for Purdue University, Department of Youth Development and Agricultural Education or sent via fax.
