Volunteer dogs needed for behavior modification and training course

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine Animal Behavior Clinic needs untrained dogs and dogs with behavior problems to participate in an animal behavior program taking place on May 23, May 25 and May 26 at the Purdue Armory.

Two practicums will be held for dogs with little or no training and dogs that have specific behavior problems. Owners must submit an application for each event, and dogs will be selected according to the appropriateness of their behavior problems.

Dogs are needed to give students the opportunity to practice the principles and techniques of behavior modification they have learned in their coursework.

"We will go through the applications and choose the dogs that we feel best meet the needs of students attending the course," said Julie Shaw, senior animal behavior technician.

Twenty-five untrained dogs are needed for the training practicum from 8:45 a.m. to noon on May 23. The dogs should not have major behavior problems but may have issues related to a lack of training, such as jumping, pulling on the leash and not coming when called.

Twenty-five dogs are needed for the behavior problem practicum from 2:45-6 p.m. on May 25 and 8:45 a.m. to noon on May 26. Participating dogs may have one or more of the following behavior problems: anxiety to specific people, objects, animals or sounds; aggression toward other dogs or people; issues with owner handling or procedures such as touching feet, nail trims, touching ears, etc.; compulsive disorders; and other issues that will be considered on an individual basis.

Behavior issues that cannot be considered for the practicum are separation anxiety, global fear (fear of everything) and territorial aggression (aggression only on the owner's property).

All volunteer dogs must have up-t- date vaccinations including bordatella (kennel cough). Owners wanting their dog to be considered for participation in one of the courses should complete a history form and application and mail to Julie Shaw, Lynn Hall, 625 Harrison St., West Lafayette, IN 47907-2026, or the paperwork can be sent via fax to (765) 496-1108.

Applications are available online or from Shaw at (765) 494-8154, shawjk@purdue.edu.
