April 21, 2004 Purdue housing cooperatives on probation for alcohol violationsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue University officials announced today (Wednesday, 4/21) that two housing cooperatives have been placed on probation for violating university regulations on the distribution and consumption of alcohol. In unrelated incidents, Gemini Cooperative at 172 Littleton St. and Ann Tweedale Cooperative at 40 N. Salisbury St. were placed on probation for making alcohol available to minors. Gemini, a men's house, was placed on probation for one semester for hosting a party in January where alcoholic beverages were served to minors. Ann Tweedale, a women's house, received a one-year probation for requiring new members to attend social functions during the fall 2003 semester where alcoholic beverages were made available to minors. "In Gemini's case, members did have several safety measures in place designed to stop minors from consuming alcohol, but we found their ID-checking system to be inadequate," said Tamara Rice, assistant dean of students. "Ann Tweedale received the longer probation because the incident involved pledges. The cooperative house should be taking responsibility to plan safe activities for their pledges. Although I wouldn't necessarily call this hazing, it's not responsible to have alcohol at a pledge function because the peer pressure is so great." Purdue's 12 housing cooperatives are student-run independent living groups that are affiliated with the university and are bound by the same university rules that govern sororities and fraternities. Each student who lives at a cooperative contributes four to six hours of work per week to offset part of their housing costs. "Alcohol violations are always taken seriously, resulting in the decision to place these organizations on probation," said Pablo Malavenda, associate dean of students. "However, from discussions with the current officers, we are confident they will practice more social responsibility for future events, which is why we didn't remove any privileges at this time." Student organizations on probation retain all rights and privileges but are not in good standing with the university. Future violations of university regulations during the probation period could result in a stricter penalty. Gemini Cooperative is on probation until Dec. 31. Ann Tweedale is on probation until April 30, 2005. Rice said the probationary sanctions could not be appealed because no privileges were revoked.
