April 20, 2004 Purdue to engage Gary in all-day visitWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue University leaders, who are traveling the state to meet and learn from its citizens, will be in Gary on Thursday (4/22) to visit schools and businesses.
Purdue President Martin C. Jischke and other Purdue leaders will visit the U.S. Steel Group's Gary Works, city hall and Tugtel Communications, in addition to other locations. Jischke also will address community and business leaders at a luncheon. Lake County businessman Mamon M. Powers Jr., a member of the Purdue Board of Trustees, will serve as host for the visit. "Our goal with these visits is to listen and to learn," said Don K. Gentry, Purdue's vice provost for engagement. "Purdue really wants to know how to best help our state, and to do that we need to experience it firsthand and meet its people." This is the fifth year Jischke and university leaders have conducted these daylong visits to Indiana communities. More than 50 previous stops have ranged from Aurora to Logansport and from Vincennes to the Indiana State Fair. Several activities are scheduled for the Gary visit: 9 a.m. Meet with Mary Steele, interim superintendent of the Gary Community School Corp., at the school corporation administration office, 620 E. 10th Place. 9:30 a.m. A presentation will be made on the Gary school program NavOps: Deep Submergence at Drew School, 2065 Mississippi St. NavOps is a math, science and technology based program for fifth-grade children that uses a scientific submarine simulator as a classroom. Twelve students operate computers that simulate the control room of a hydraulically operated submarine platform. The students operate several of the ship's systems to learn math and science concepts. 10:15 a.m. View a NavOps simulation at William Merritt Chase School, 7111 Chase St. 11 a.m. Attend a presentation on the Banneker Achievement Program at the Banneker Achievement Center, 1912 W. 23rd Ave. The center offers an accelerated curriculum for advanced students who are preparing for middle school. Noon Lunch with community and business leaders at the Miller Bakery Café, 555 S. Lake St. Jischke will speak on Purdue initiatives in Northwest Indiana and how Purdue can partner with the community to enhance economic development. 1:45 p.m. Tour U.S. Steel Group's Gary Works 1 N. Broadway. Gary Works is U. S. Steel's largest manufacturing plant and the largest integrated steel plant in North America. Covering almost 4,000 acres on the south shore of Lake Michigan, the plant has the capacity to produce 7.7 million tons of raw steel annually. The raw steel is processed into a wide variety of value-added, steel products for use in automobiles, food packaging, appliances and construction. 3:30 p.m. Visit Gary Mayor Scott L. King at city hall, 401 Broadway. King will make a presentation on economic development in Gary. 4:45 p.m. Tour Tugtel Communications, 4485 W. Fifth Ave. Formed in 1997, Tugtel Communications provides engineering, material furnishing and installation services for equipment manufacturers and service providers in the telecommunications industry. Jischke, who came to Purdue in August 2000, is the university's 10th president. He previously served for nine years as president of Iowa State University, another land-grant institution. His experience in higher education also includes 17 years as professor and dean at the University of Oklahoma and five years at the University of Missouri-Rolla. Jischke was the founding president of the Global Consortium of Higher Education and Research for Agriculture. He served as chairman and board member of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges and as a board member of the American Council on Education, National Merit Scholarship Corporation and Kellogg Commission on the Future of State and Land-Grant Universities. He is on the boards of directors of the Association of American Universities and the American Council on Competitiveness. After receiving his doctorate in aeronautics and astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1968, Jischke joined the faculty of the University of Oklahoma's School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering. During his 17 years at Oklahoma, he served in multiple capacities. He became director of the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering in 1977. He served as dean of the College of Engineering from 1981 to 1986, and he was named the university's interim president in 1985.
