Purdue's grad programs rank among best in U.S. News survey

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University's engineering, management, speech pathology and audiology, and education programs rank among the top graduate programs in the country, according to a U.S.News & World Report survey released today (Friday, 4/2).

The survey ranks Purdue's graduate programs in the Schools of Engineering No. 8 overall in the country. The Krannert Graduate School of Management ranked No. 27 overall. Programs in speech-pathology ranked third nationally, and audiology climbed five spots to eighth. Education ranked No. 47.

"It is very pleasing to see the rankings of Purdue's engineering programs continue to rise," said Linda P.B. Katehi, John A. Edwardson Dean of Engineering. "To be so well thought of by both our peers and industry leaders is a testament to our students and faculty at Purdue."

Purdue's engineering specialty programs also rank highly. Industrial engineering is No. 3; aerospace, aeronautical and astronautical engineering, No. 6; civil engineering, No. 7; mechanical engineering, No.7; computer engineering, No. 9; electrical engineering, No. 9; chemical engineering, No. 16; and materials engineering, No. 16.

In last year's survey of graduate programs, Purdue's agricultural and nuclear engineering programs ranked second and sixth, respectively. Neither field was included in this year's U.S. News survey.

Krannert School MBA programs ranked No. 27 overall among the nation's 377 accredited MBA programs in business and management. The Krannert School of Management's MBA program ranked No. 3 nationally in production/operations management and No. 6 in supply chain/logistics.

Richard A. Cosier, Krannert School dean and Leeds Professor of Management, said, "Our ranking places Krannert securely in the top 10 percent of the nation's MBA programs. Our top 10 rankings in production/operations management and supply chain/logistics testify to our traditional strength in manufacturing enterprises.

"Our new Rawls Hall facility is a state-of-the-art teaching and learning resource that is already attracting dynamic new faculty and talented students that makes us view the future with optimism."

In addition to the top 10 specialty rankings in production/operations and supply chain/logistics, the Krannert School ranked No. 13 in management information systems and No. 18 in executive MBA education programs.

The Department of Audiology and Speech Sciences scored two top 10 rankings – speech-pathology, third; and audiology, eighth.

Anne Smith, professor and audiology and speech sciences department head, said, "It is not a surprise to see a jump in audiology, thanks to the addition of our new joint clinical doctoral degree. This new doctoral program is based at Purdue but includes faculty from the Indiana University School of Medicine who teach courses at Purdue. Our students also obtain clinical experience at the medical center in Indianapolis."

The survey also ranked Purdue's School of Education at No. 47.

George W. Hynd, dean of Purdue's School of Education, said, "It is clear that, as the School of Education moves forward in accomplishing what we envision in our strategic plan, the national stature of our faculty and programs will be recognized by our colleagues and the general public nationwide."

The magazine did not rank graduate programs in science, the humanities or social sciences in this year's survey.

U.S.News & World Report's complete rankings in "America's Best Graduate Schools" will be available on newsstands Monday (4/5). U.S. News has published graduate school rankings annually since 1987.
