Cambridge professor to lecture at Purdue on science and religion

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Cambridge astrophysicist John D. Barrow will discuss the relationship between science and religion during an April 1 lecture at Purdue University.

Barrow's talk, entitled "The Nature of the Universe and our Place in the Cosmos," begins at 8 p.m. in Fowler Hall. He will consider some of the latest discoveries regarding the nature of the universe and their implications for philosophy and theology. The lecture is free and open to the public.

"Barrow lectures frequently on the international circuit and is very engaging," said Roberto Colella, a professor of physics who is helping organize the event. "This lecture should be of interest to the layperson as well as the expert."

Barrow is a professor of mathematical sciences at Cambridge University. He received his doctorate in astrophysics from Oxford University in 1977 and held positions at Oxford, Berkeley and the University of Sussex. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2003.

His research interests in cosmology and particle physics span from quantum cosmological models to the inflationary universe, galaxies' formation, microwave background and dark matter. He has delivered lectures on cosmology at the Venice Film Festival, the British prime minister's residence, Windsor Castle and the Vatican.

Barrow's lecture is funded in part by a grant from the John Templeton Foundation and is sponsored by the schools of Science and Liberal Arts, the departments of Physics and Philosophy, the Religious Studies Program, the Science and Culture Program, members of the University Religious Leaders Association and private donors.
