Doc Watson to perform at Purdue on March 26

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Folk musician Doc Watson will perform at 8 p.m. Friday (3/26) in Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse.

Presented by Purdue Convocations, Watson will be joined by his grandson Richard Watson and friend David Holt for an evening of traditional music titled "The Hills of Home."

Watson blends his traditional Appalachian musical roots with bluegrass, country, gospel and blues to create a unique style and expansive repertoire. He is a singer and picker who has been said to have invented the art of playing mountain fiddle tunes on flattop guitar. Watson, 81, has been honored with the National Medal of Arts, National Heritage Fellowship and six Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award at the most recent Grammy Awards.

Richard Watson made his professional debut alongside his grandfather in 1991 at MerleFest, an annual event dedicated to the life and music of Merle Watson, Richard's father and Doc's son. While music is not Richard's full-time profession, he plays blues guitar and travels with Doc whenever possible. The duo released their first collaborative album, "Third Generation Blues," in 1999.

David Holt plays 10 acoustic instruments and has released numerous recordings of traditional mountain music and southern folktales. He is a three-time winner of the Frets magazine readers' poll for "best old-time banjoist" and a four-time Grammy nominee and one-time winner. His dedication to performing and preserving traditional American music and storytelling have earned his work a place in the permanent collection of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

Ticket prices, which include a $1 service fee, are $20 for students and $28 for general public. Tickets are on sale now at any campus box office by calling (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW or at any Ticketmaster outlet.
