March 3, 2004 Politically incorrect comedian performs at UnionWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. The Purdue Student Union Board will host comedian Stephen Lynch tomorrow (Thursday, 3/4) at 7:30 p.m. in the Purdue Memorial Union South Ballroom. Lynch says his comedy routine includes perversely hilarious songs, with soulful melodies and honeyed vocals. He packages these controversial ballads into the context of pretty little songs. His politically incorrect tunes have an outrageous edge that makes you look around to see whos there before you laugh out loud. Lynch has been featured on Comedy Central Presents, Comedy Centrals Premium Blend, and VH1s Street Games. Lyrics from one song that has stirred up a great deal of controversy, "Kill A Kitten," include: "If the game of life makes you feel like quittin,' it helps a lot if you kill a kitten. Mark my words, from where I'm sittin,' it helps a lot if you kill a kitten. There's no crime you'd be commitin' if you kill a kitten. If the thought of killing a kitten makes you queasy, grab a pitchfork from a shed and kill a puppy dog instead." In an open letter to fans that Lynch wrote in response to complaints that the song promotes animal cruelty, Lynch writes: "I have recently received a number of emails regarding my song 'Kill A Kitten.' It seems that the lyrics have been circulating on the Internet with the misunderstanding that the song is to be taken literally. As you may not know, I am a comedian and musician. I wrote the song in response to the atrocities that have been perpetrated on innocent animals. I am as repulsed by such crimes as you are, and I wrote the song to mock such acts. No intelligent person could think that harming an animal in any way could accomplish the goals stated in the song. That's the joke. I am sorry that my work has been taken out of context and used as a target for justified but misdirected anger. Animal abuse is a serious problem and we all need to work diligently to prevent it." The Purdue Student Union Board's mission is to provide a variety of programs and services that enrich and entertain, and give students leadership development experience.
