February 23, 2004 Project Respect Awareness Week continues through March 1WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Project Respect, a series of events at Purdue University designed to raise awareness of diversity, continues today (Monday, 2/23) through March 1 with the theme Snapshots: Varied Faces of Our Culture. Among the highlights is a lecture on Thursday (2/26) by playwright, actress and author Anna Deavere Smith. Several student organizations and campus departments have planned other events that reflect various views on cultural diversity. The complete schedule of events is as follows: Today (Monday, 2/23). 7 p.m., Fowler Hall, Stewart Center. Step Afrika! A percussive dance ensemble highlights the African-American fraternity and sorority art form of stepping and its link to dance traditions around the world. Sponsored by the Black Cultural Center. Tuesday (2/24). 11 a.m., Stewart Center, Table Space 2, Chinese calligraphy demonstration sponsored by the Purdue Chinese Calligraphy Club; 2 p.m., Stewart Center, Room 311, Hate & Bias: How it Affects a College Campus, workshop sponsored by the Affirmative Action Office and the Office of the Dean of Students; 5:30 p.m., Hillel Foundation, 912 W. State St., Sagit Kaufman, director of public affairs for the Consulate General of Israel to the Midwest, and Steve Dishler, former paratrooper with the Israel Defense Forces, will discuss issues and experiences related to gay rights in Israel and the Israeli military, and the movie "Yossie and Jagger," about two gay Israeli soldiers, will be shown; 7 p.m., Fowler Hall, Stewart Center, the film "Divine Intervention" will be shown, sponsored by The Organization of Arab Students; 7:30 p.m., Stewart Center, Room 202, Archie Bunker's Neighborhood (interactive exercise), sponsored by the Diversity Resource Office. Wednesday (2/25). 6 p.m., Krannert Drawing Room, diversity dinner, sponsored by the School of Management student council; 8 p.m., Matthew Hall, Room 210, the film "Philadelphia," starring Anna Deavere Smith, sponsored by the Purdue Student Union Board. Thursday (2/26). 12:05 p.m., Beering Hall, Room 2290, a film about domestic violence called "Defending Our Lives" will be shown, sponsored by the Women's Resource Office; 7 p.m., Stewart Center, Loeb Playhouse, Anna Deavere Smith, "Snapshots: Glimpses of American in Change," $4 with Purdue student ID, $8 general admission; 7:30p.m., Fowler Hall, Stewart Center, Imani Winds musical presentation, sponsored by Purdue Convocations. Friday (2/27). 9:30 p.m., St. Thomas Aquinas Center, 535 W. State St., Mike Reiss, producer of "The Simpsons," will give a lecture titled "The Simpsons and other Gentiles I've Known." Sponsored jointly by Hillel Foundation, GSG, Purdue Student Union Board, Israel Council at Purdue, Inter-fraternity Council, Pan-Hellenic Association, Purdue Student Government, Hillel Graduates and Professionals at Purdue, St. Thomas Aquinas Center, QRU and University Relations. Monday, March 1. 4 p.m., "The Women's Suffrage Movement: What It Really Meant," Stewart Center, Room 322. Guest speaker Donna Collier-Turner, a Sojourner Truth Scholar, will present the Women's History Month Lecture, sponsored by the Women's Resource Office.
