February 23, 2004 Appointments and promotionsThe Purdue University Police Department has hired seven new officers and staff members. Kenneth R. St. Myers, Matthew J. Gard and Erich S. Haley have been hired as communication dispatchers. Before joining the department, St. Myers and Haley worked in similar positions with the Crown Point Police Department and Fountain County Sheriff's Department, respectively. Gard graduated from Purdue in December 2003. The department also has hired four new patrol officers: Michael A. Boesch, Allen B. Myles, Eric L. Greenburg and Kelly L. Mohundro. Boesch is a 2002 Purdue graduate, and Myles is a graduate of West Lafayette Jr./Sr. High School. Both will attend the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy this spring. Greenburg came to the department from the Fowler Police Department and Mohundro formerly worked for the West Lafayette Police Department. Campus activitiesWilliam C. Oakes, professor of engineering and director of Entrepreneurship Initiatives, will give a talk titled "Service Learning" at 3:30 p.m. Thursday (2/26) in the West Faculty Lounge, Purdue Memorial Union. Service-learning integrates community service into academic courses. Oakes will discuss how studies have shown that service-learning can positively impact student retention, motivation and learning of academic material. Oakes has received the Charles B. Murphy Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award and the A.A. Potter Outstanding Teaching Award for the Schools of Engineering. He also is a fellow of the Teaching Academy and an Indiana Campus Compact Faculty Fellow. Alumni honorsDonzel Leggett recently received the Outstanding Industrial Technologist Award from the Industry Division of the National Association of Industrial Technology. The award recognizes those who distinguish themselves by exemplary leadership and application of industrial technology practices. Leggett, who received a bachelor's degree and master's degree in industrial technology from Purdue in 1990 and 1992, respectively, is director of promotional logistics for General Mills.
