February 17, 2004 Anna Deavere Smith to give one-woman show at PurdueWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Actress, playwright and professor Anna Deavere Smith will present "Snapshots: Glimpses of America in Change" at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26, at Purdue University's Loeb Playhouse in Stewart Center.
The performance is co-sponsored by Project Respect and the Black Cultural Center as part of the university's celebration of Black History Month. Newsweek magazine wrote that Smith is "the most exciting individual in American theater," and that she "uses her singular brand of theater to explore issues of race, community and character." She is best known for her television roles in "The West Wing," "The Practice," "Presidio Med," and her film roles in "Philadelphia," "The American President," "Dave" and "The Human Stain." Smith was born Sept. 18, 1950, in Baltimore, Md., the daughter of a coffee merchant and an elementary school teacher. She attended Beaver College and received a master's in fine arts from the American Conservatory Theatre in 1976. She has taught at Carnegie-Mellon, New York University, the University of Southern California, Yale and Stanford. In 1996 the Ford Foundation named Smith its first artist-in-residence. She also was named one of the MacArthur Foundation Fellows in 1996. Smith lives in San Francisco.
