Purdue workshop offers info on raising prawn for profit

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Aquaculture producers can learn more about production, feeding, harvesting and marketing of freshwater prawn during the Purdue University aquaculture workshop Feb. 13, 14 and 15.

The workshop will be held at the Lee's Inn, 2075 E. Tipton St., Seymour, Ind. The workshops starts at1 p.m. on Feb. 13 and ends at noon on Feb. 15.

"Any producer considering raising freshwater prawn should attend this program," said Charles Felkner, Purdue Extension aquaculture educator. "The program will offer solid and complete information on how to successfully raise prawn for profit."

The featured speaker will be Bob Boyd, owner and operator of Bob's Shrimp & Trout Farm of Cobden, Ill. Boyd is a veteran prawn grower and has been successful with the marketing of his annual production, Felkner said. Boyd will cover all aspects of the business beginning with proper pond construction, sources of seed stock, stocking rates, feeding programs and ending up with harvesting and marketing.

In addition, Boyd will offer ideas to growers about double cropping prawn with the same ponds. This program will also allow producers adequate time for a question-and-answer session with Boyd during each workshop.

Advance registration is requested by Feb. 12. Cost to register is $80 and should be sent to Felkner at the Purdue Extension Office in Morgan County, 180 S. Main St., Suite 229, Martinsville, Ind. 46151. For more information, call the local Purdue Extension office or Felkner at (765) 412-2134.
