January 28, 2004 Saxophone quartet partners with Purdue for multimedia performanceWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. The New Century Saxophone Quartet will perform J.S. Bach's "The Art of Fugue" at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday (1/29) in Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse. The multimedia performance debuted Monday (1/26) at University of Missouri-St. Louis and also will be presented at North Carolina State University on March 20. The New Century Saxophone Quartet with Robert Besen of BesenArts, has partnered with New York City animation house Misha Films, Purdue Convocations, and a team of Purdue students, faculty and staff from the Envision Center, the Department of Computer Graphics Technology and the Theatre Division. Purdue Convocations is presenting the quartet's West Lafayette appearance. The New Century Saxophone Quartet's performances have included a White House show for former President Clinton and a concerto performance with the U.S. Navy Band. It is the only ensemble of its kind to win first prize in the Concert Artists Guild Competition. "Tackling brave new territory in the conservative-leaning realm of classical music takes a unique blend of conviction, refined talent and a bit of damn-the-torpedoes ambition," wrote the "Los Angeles Times." "Those qualities are amply in evidence with the New Century Saxophone Quartet, not to mention a finely-honed musicality deserving wider acceptance." Tickets are $15 for students and $25 for general public. Tickets are available at any campus box office or Ticketmaster outlet.
