December 15, 2001 Purdue trustees approve housing fees for 2002-2003WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue undergraduate students living in university residences will pay an average of $218 more during the next academic year. The board of trustees approved the new rates today (Saturday, 12/15). Under the new room and board rate schedule, undergraduate students living in university residences will have a variety of options, but the average cost will be $ 5,698 per year for a double room and 15 meals a week. This is an increase of 4 percent, or $218. Graduate student housing will increase 2.62 percent. Housing for families living in the Purdue Village will go up 4.6 percent. The rates go into effect Aug. 5. Marvis J. Boscher, executive director of University Residences, said 1.5 percent of the rate increase will fund the major renovation of Cary Quadrangle that began in 2000. A half percent also supports the installation of sprinklers in all residence halls, beginning with Shreve Hall. Boscher said University Residences is self-supporting and does not receive any state funds or general student revenues. "We are planning for the future while respecting the current economic conditions and considering the competitive marketplace," Boscher said. "We remain conscientious about providing the best value possible for our residents." Purdue's housing and food service fees rank fifth among Big Ten universities, and Boscher said she expects the ranking won't change. Students living in undergraduate housing again will be able to choose from three meal plans: 20, 15 or 10 meals a week. The average undergraduate room with the 20-meal-per-week plan will cost $6,142. Under the 10-meal-per-week plan, the rate will average $5,446. All undergraduate rates include telephone with call-waiting and voice mail, cable television hookup in each room and access to Purdue's central computing network through computer labs in each hall. Students also benefit from educational and personal support provided by professional and student staff. Rates for the Hawkins and Young graduate houses will average $372 per month. The rate includes utilities, telephone with call-waiting and voice mail, cable television hookup and air conditioning. Starting July 1, the average monthly rent for Purdue Village will be $513.80. Utilities, telephone with call-waiting and voice mail, and cable television hookup are included. Graduate students and residents of Purdue Village do not have contracts with the university that include meals. Approximately 12,700 undergraduate students live in 13 traditional housing units and two apartment complexes at Purdue. Purdue has the largest residence hall system in the country that promotes student choice by not requiring residency.
