December 7, 2001 Purdue couple headed for UC Santa BarbaraWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. A pair of Purdue professors who have distinguished themselves as teachers and administrative leaders on the West Lafayette campus are heading west. Michael M. Stohl, Purdue's dean of international programs, and his wife Cynthia Stohl, head of the Department of Communication in the School of Liberal Arts, have announced that they will leave Purdue Jan. 1 to become professors of communication at the University of California Santa Barbara. Purdue Provost Sally Frost Mason has named Associate Provost Miroslaw J. Skibniewski as the interim dean for international programs. Margaret Moan Rowe, dean of the School of Liberal Arts, is expected to select an interim head for the communication department before the end of the year. "We are both eager to return to the classroom full time and the situation at UC Santa Barbara is an ideal one for us," said Michael Stohl, who has served as dean of Purdue's international programs since 1992. "We have both spent our entire professional academic careers at Purdue and have raised a family in this community so we will miss it," said Cynthia Stohl, the Margaret Church Distinguished Professor of Communication who has headed the department since 1998. "Our Purdue experience has been wonderful, but we are excited about the opportunities for teaching and collaborative research that we will have in California." Frost Mason said, "We feel fortunate to have had both Michael and Cynthia Stohl as part of the Purdue faculty for so many years. They are both excellent teachers and top-notch administrators who will be difficult to replace, and we wish them well in their future endeavors." Michael Stohl joined the faculty as an instructor in 1972 and became an assistant professor in the Department of Political Science after earning his doctorate from Northwestern University in 1973. He was named director of programs for study abroad and associate director of international education and research in 1987 and was appointed dean of international programs in 1992. His research interests focus on international relations with special emphasis on political violence, terrorism and human rights. Cynthia Stohl joined the Department of Communication faculty as an assistant professor in 1982 after earning both her master's and doctoral degrees from Purdue. An award-winning teacher, she was named head of the department in March 1998 and the Margaret Church Distinguished Professor of Communication later that same year. Her research has focused on group and organizational communication, global and international organizations, communication networks and worker participation programs. As associate provost, Skibniewski's responsibilities include administration of several campuswide academic programs and initiatives, and coordination and service on a number of university administrative and faculty committees. He also is a professor of civil engineering and is fluent in seven foreign languages. He earned a master's degree in engineering from Warsaw University of Technology and master's and doctorate degrees in civil engineering and project management from Carnegie-Mellon University. He also has received a certificate from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education Management Development Program. Writer: Sharon A.
