November 30, 2001 Illiana Commercial Vegetable Growers' School returnsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Vegetable farmers will learn the latest in pesticide management, irrigation scheduling and variety selection at the annual Illiana Commercial Vegetable Growers' School Jan. 3 at Teibel's Restaurant in Schererville, Ind. "The school gives growers a chance to network," said Liz Maynard, Extension specialist for horticulture and one of the programs' presenters. "They can talk to other growers, seed and irrigation equipment suppliers, and Purdue University and University of Illinois staff one-on-one." The first part of the daylong school is devoted to insect-management related topics. Highlights include managing insects in peppers and sweet corn, a review of new insecticides, insects in organic vegetables, pumpkin and melon diseases and pesticide recordkeeping. After lunch, the school will cover foliar fertilizers, scheduling drip irrigation and marketing specialty tomatoes. New varieties of muskmelons, watermelons, pumpkins, sweet corn and tomatoes also will be reviewed. "This year we have an agricultural engineering specialist coming to cover drip irrigation," Maynard said. "We don't have that every year. Using drip irrigation is becoming more common." Seed company representatives, irrigation equipment businesses and others serving the vegetable industry will hold a small trade show. Participants who have a valid Private Pesticide Applicator License from the State of Indiana with an expiration date of 2005 or later may receive credit toward recertification by attending the morning session and paying a $10 fee in addition to the program cost. To register for the program, send a check for $20 payable to "Lake County CES Educational Fund" to Northwest Commercial Horticulture Program, Purdue University North Central, 1401 S. U.S. 421, Westville, IN 46391, attn.: Liz Maynard. Preregistering by Dec. 28 is encouraged.
