November 30, 2001 Purdue graduate students' artwork featured in exhibitWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Ten graduate student artists from the art and design division of Purdue's Department of Visual and Performing Arts will have their work exhibited in downtown Lafayette during the holiday season. The exhibit, at 116 N. 3rd St., begins today (Friday, 11/30) with an opening reception from 7-10 p.m. Hours for the exhibition, which is free and open to the public, are 2-8 p.m. Monday (12/3) through Saturday (12/8). The students' installations were created during a seminar taught by Charles Gick, art and design professor. Gick says the exhibition's non-traditional venue created a unique challenge. "The students were forced to delve within themselves to create an installation piece responding to the raw and empty retail space presented before them," he says. The artwork includes a series of whitewashed photographs by Lynn Lee, depicting fading memories and forgotten stories. Artist Kathy Henke Evans uses old heater grates stored in the building along with dramatic lighting, video, sound and text as a memorial to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Another installation designed by Althea Murphy-Price uses pantyhose, bleach and dye as a reference to the site, which was a woman's hosiery store from the mid 30s to late 70s. Additional installations by students Natascha Ampunant, Christine Chin, Kyung-im (Kami) Choo, Melanie Hill, Dana Kroos, Jamie Niess and James Werner also are featured.
