New mural unveiled in Shreve Residence Hall

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Students who gather in the vending lounge of Shreve Residence Hall now have something besides an array of tempting goodies to catch their eye.

The plain tan north and east walls have been transformed into a three-dimensional, floor-to-ceiling mural. The mural features historical figures who exemplify characteristics associated with eight stages of wellness. Mother Teresa, Leonardo Da Vinci, Thomas Edison and Helen Keller are among those represented in the mural. The stages begin with discovery, continue through monarch, scholar, explorer, philosopher, warrior and artist, and conclude with the renaissance stage.

The idea for the mural was developed last fall, when plans were outlined for renovating the lounge. Shreve hall staff conducted a survey to get residents' input on which historic person should represent each stage of wellness. The staff also consulted the Diversity Resource Office for ideas.

Kris Schraeder, manager of Shreve hall, says the mural supports the wellness program implemented by residence hall counselors.

"The mural visually supports the concept of wellness and encourages students to become involved in wellness programs," Schraeder says. "The message behind the mural also advocates the mission of University Residences as a system in celebrating diversity and learning about ourselves and others."

Each semester, counseling staff provide opportunities for residents to attend at least two programs per week that focus on a particular issue, ranging from career planning to becoming more knowledgeable about different religions. As residents participate in these programs, they earn points by progressing through the wellness stages.

"The wellness programs provide opportunities for students to become more well-rounded people," Schraeder says. "Students learn to achieve balance in their daily lives and increase their self-awareness."

After attending three programs, residents are rewarded with a key chain and are encouraged to continue exploring the remaining stages of wellness.
