November 12, 2001 Liberal Arts dean appointed to vice provost postWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Margaret Moan Rowe, dean of Purdue's School of Liberal Arts and a professor of English, has been named Purdue University's new vice provost for academic affairs, effective Jan. 1.
"I am exceedingly pleased that Dean Rowe will be joining the team in the provost's office," said Provost Sally Frost Mason. "She brings broad administrative expertise, a profound knowledge of the institution and its faculty and students, and a wonderful sense of humor as a bonus. "I knew that finding a successor for George Van Scoyoc would be a challenge. With Dean Rowe on our team I'm confident we've met the challenge." Rowe succeeds former Associate Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs George Van Scoyoc, a professor of agronomy who recently returned to teaching in the School of Agriculture. Rowe also will continue to serve as dean of the School of Liberal Arts until June 30. In addition to planning, managing and reviewing all Purdue academic programs, the Office of the Provost administers a variety of academic initiatives aimed at the continuous improvement of Purdue's academics. Rowe was selected as the top candidate for the post following an internal search. As vice provost, she will retain her academic appointment in the Department of English, where her teaching and research interests include 20th century British fiction and poetry, commonwealth literature and women's studies. Rowe joined Purdue's English department faculty in 1969 and served as assistant dean in what was then known as the School of Humanities, Social Science and Education from 1973 to 1976. She was named head of the English department in 1990 after serving as the director of the department's graduate studies program from 1981 to 1986. In 1996, Rowe was named dean of the School of Liberal Arts one of the largest schools at Purdue which encompasses 11 academic departments and 14 interdisciplinary programs. A national search will be conducted to help select a new dean, Mason said. Rowe earned a bachelor's degree from Holy Family College in Philadelphia, Pa., and master's and doctoral degrees from Temple University. Writer: Sharon A.
