Livestock Hall of Fame introduces two inductees

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Two Hoosiers were recently inducted into the Indiana Livestock Breeders Association Hall of Fame for their dedication to the livestock industry.

Wayne Yake of Salem, Ind., was recognized for his work with the swine industry, and Robert Benson of Noblesville, Ind., was honored for his contributions to the sheep industry.

Yake managed breeding stock at Lynnwood Farms in Hamilton County and at Purdue University's Boar Test Station where he produced several national champion Berkshire boars and gilts. Yake also has been involved and had leadership roles at Purdue and with the Indiana and National Berkshire Association.

"Wayne Yake has always been a leader by example," said Alan Grant, Purdue animal sciences interim department head. "He shares his knowledge and enthusiasm with young people involved with the swine industry and serves as a valuable mentor to many junior hog showmen."

Benson is involved with breeding Shropshire sheep and has served as a delegate for the Indiana Sheep Association. He works with the Indiana State Fair and the Hamilton County Sheep Producers. Although Benson is retired, he enjoys working for the State of Indiana as director of the Grain Buyers and Licensing Agency.

"Bob Benson enjoys educating people about agriculture," Grant said. "He has a sincere interest in the industry and shares that with others. Bob is a true leader and builder of the Indiana Sheep Industry."

The Indiana Livestock Breeders Association is an organization that supports the improvement of livestock and 4-H youth activities. A representative from Purdue's animal science department sits on the ILBA committee as secretary.
