WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University's School of Education recently awarded Crystal Apple Awards to five exemplary educators and two organizations that provide support for three of university's programs.

The 2001 award winners were Carolyn Claussen, Sheila Klinker, John Pearl, Lois Smiley, Melanie Swift, the Gannett Foundation and the Harrison Kiwanis Club.

• Claussen is a Title I coordinator and comprehensive school reform demonstration facilitator at Washington Elementary School in Lafayette, Ind. Her nominators said she has been instrumental in school reform and curricular improvement efforts at the school. Her nominators said Smiley "nurtured all her students, giving them individualized attention to help them develop confidence in their ability to succeed, and her rapport with parents was outstanding." In addition, Smiley was recognized for her positive influence on other educators and student teachers with her professionalism, generosity and dedication to her profession.
