October 5, 2001 Pharmaceutical company funds new scholarships at PurdueWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. The manufacturing division of Merck & Co. Inc. has pledged $50,000 in scholarship funds to Purdues School of Pharmacy and Pharmacal Sciences to encourage students to pursue careers in industrial pharmacy. The gift will support four undergraduate scholarships per year for five years in the school's bachelors degree program in pharmaceutical sciences. "The bachelor of science curriculum at Purdue features a solid background in chemistry and science with the opportunity to focus on elective coursework in industrial pharmacy," said Donald O. Barrick, senior manager in new products planning for Merck & Co. and a Purdue pharmacy alumnus. "The program provides great preparation for careers in the areas of production technical support, pharmaceutical research and development, manufacturing or regulatory affairs. Merck is proud to support such an innovative degree program, and we are confident that it will attract bright, talented students who will become future leaders in our industry." The first Merck Scholar Awards recipients will be selected next spring for the 2002-03 school year. Merck is a worldwide research-intensive company that discovers, develops, manufactures and markets human and animal health products and services. Its corporate headquarters are located in Whitehouse Station, N.J. Purdues School of Pharmacy currently enrolls 831 undergraduate, professional and graduate students in programs in three departments: pharmacy practice, industrial and physical pharmacy, and medicinal chemistry and molecular pharmacology.
