Composer John Harbison also has written numerous works for Sylvan.

Sylvan has performed with many of the leading orchestras in the world, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony and the Cleveland Orchestra.

A Grammy and Emmy Award winner for his role in "Nixon in China," Sylvan has received Grammy nominations for his recording with David Breitman, "L’Horizon Chimérique," which features songs of Gabriel Fauré; "Beloved That Pilgrimage," a program of American songs with music by Barber, Copland and Chanler; and for John Adams’ "The Wound Dresser."

Sylvan, who was born in New York City, is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music. He also studied at the preparatory division of the Julliard School and at the Tanglewood Music Center.

David Breitman, a native of Montreal, did his undergraduate work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
