Purdue president named to board that fosters community service

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University President Martin C. Jischke has accepted an invitation to serve on the national board of Campus Compact, an organization of university presidents and college deans that helps students learn about citizenship through community service opportunities.

Jischke will serve on the organization's policy committee. He will help shape Campus Compact's position on national policies supporting community service and will work to increase its influence in national policy discussions.

Jischke says he is pleased to promote supportive academic environments for community service.

"Today, more than ever, universities have a mandate to prepare students to be active, committed and informed community citizens," Jischke says. "I look forward to furthering this mission by assisting Campus Compact in any way I can."

Federal legislation and programs in which Campus Compact has played a key role include the National and Community Service Act of 1990, the 1994 revised Work-Study Guidelines of the U.S. Department of Education, the Community Service Provisions of the 1992 Re-authorization of the Higher Education Act, the Student Literacy and Mentoring Corps, the Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education, the Innovative Projects for the Community Service Program and the America Reads initiative.

Campus Compact was founded in 1985 by the presidents of Brown, Georgetown and Stanford universities and the president of the Education Commission of the States. Their goal was to refute the stereotype of college students as materialistic and self-absorbed. More than 750 colleges and universities in 46 states and the District of Columbia are members.
