EDITORS: This calendar lists selected Purdue events during the next four weeks. Events are free and open to the public, except where noted, and all are open to news media coverage. New or updated listings have two asterisks (**). All events in this calendar, plus many others, are listed in Purdue's online calendar.

EVENTS

** • Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 20 and 21. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. BIG BANG: Purdue Big Bass Drum Birthday Celebration. Imagination Station. 600 N. Fourth St., Lafayette. Two-day celebration for children and families, features workshops, displays, entertainment and treats.

** • Wednesday, Oct. 24. 6:30 p.m. Krannert Leadership Speakers Series. Ritz Charles, 12156 N. Meridian St., Carmel. Bill Russell, the center of Boston Celtics during the 1960s and author of current bestseller "Russell Rules," is the featured speaker for the first Krannert Leadership Speaker Series. Dinner is included in the event. Also speaking: Purdue President Martin C. Jischke and Krannert Dean Richard Cosier. ** • Thursday through Saturday. Oct. 25 to 27. School of Consumer and Family Sciences 75th Anniversary. University Inn, Stewart Center and Purdue Memorial Union. Thursday will kick off the weekend with a Family Fun Night at the University Inn. On Friday there will be special guest speakers, a luncheon and dinner celebration. Saturday will feature the annual pregame tailgate and the student council silent auction.

** • Friday, Oct. 26. 7 p.m. Mortar Board 75th Anniversary Dinner. University Inn, West Lafayette. Dean of Students Emerita Barbara Cook will speak to the class of 2001-2002, alumni and guests. Tickets are $40. Contact: Jennifer Greer, (765) 743-6387, greerj@purdue.edu.

ENTERTAINMENT

• Tuesday, Oct. 2. 7:30 p.m. "Frank Lloyd Wright" starring John Crowther. Experimental Theatre, Stewart Center. Presented in conjunction with the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette's exhibit, "Frank Lloyd Wright's Samara: Winged Seeds of Indiana." Tickets: $15 to $22.

• Thursday, Oct. 4. 7 p.m. Scott Ainslie. Fowler Hall, Stewart Center. Performance of African-influenced blues. Tickets: $7 to $10.

• Saturday, Oct. 6. Purdue Bands Game Day Concerts. Festivities begin with a performance at Slayter Center by the "All-American" Marching Band 90 minutes prior to kickoff. There also will be a postgame concert at the Purdue Mall Water Sculpture near Hovde Hall.

• Thursday, Oct. 11. 7:30 p.m. Sanford Sylvan, baritone. Loeb Playhouse, Stewart Center. First "Composer-in-the-Spotlight" program sponsored by Purdue Convocations. Tickets: $15 to $22.

• Friday. Oct. 12. 8 p.m. American Music Review and Lab Jazz Band. Loeb Playhouse, Stewart Center.

• Sunday, Oct. 14. 2:30 p.m. Purdue Symphony Orchestra Pops Concert. Long Center, 111 N. Sixth St., Lafayette.

• Wednesday, Oct. 17. 7:30 p.m. Jewish Studies Program Film Series. Room 239, Stanley Coulter Hall. The film, "Europa Europa" will be shown.

** • Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 18 to 28. "The Glass Mendacity." Black Box Theatre, Creative Arts Building 3. Tennessee Williams' collection of dysfunctional characters comes together in this parody. Guest artist Jeff Casazza from the Indiana Repertory Theatre directs the production. Tickets $5.

** • Friday, Oct. 19. 8 p.m. Purdue Jazz Band. Loeb Playhouse, Stewart Center.

** • Saturday, Oct. 20. 8 p.m. Klezperanto! Loeb Playhouse, Stewart Center. This group regrooves klezmer music. Presented by Purdue Convocations. Tickets are $17 to $22.

** • Tuesday, Oct. 23. 7:30 p.m. Ballet Hispanico. Loeb Playhouse, Stewart Center. Presented by Purdue Convocations. Tickets are $17 to $22.

** • Saturday, Oct. 27. Purdue Bands Game Day Concerts. Homecoming 2001 features a salute to Big Bass Drum's 80th birthday and performances by Purdue Alumni Band. Festivities begin with a performance at Slayter Center by the "All-American" Marching Band 90 minutes prior to kickoff. There also will be a postgame concert at the Purdue Mall Water Sculpture near Hovde Hall.

** • Sunday, Oct. 28. 3 p.m. "Rent." Elliott Hall of Music. The Pulitzer Prize-winning musical tells the story of a group of young Greenwich Villagers learning to cope with life. Presented by Purdue Convocations. Tickets are $12 to $38.

LECTURES

• Wednesday, Oct. 3, 7:30 p.m. Fall 2001 Sears Lecture Series. Fowler Hall, Stewart Center. "U.S.-Iran Relations: At the Dawn of a New Century." Speaker: Gary Sick, director of the Middle East Institute at Columbia University. Topic: "Iran and the United States: The Politics of Hostility."

• Thursday, Oct. 11. 4:30 p.m. Department of Philosophy Colloquium Series. Liberal Arts and Education Building, Room 1268. Jacqueline Scott, professor of philosophy at Loyola University in Chicago, will present "The Price of the Ticket: A Genealogy and Re-evaluation of Race."

• Saturday, Oct. 13. 1 p.m. Culture and Technology. Black Cultural Center, 1100 Third St., West Lafayette. Abdul Alkalimat, professor of Africana studies and sociology and director of the African studies program at the University of Toledo, will speak on "Moving African Communities Toward a Position of Strength."

** • Monday, Oct. 15. 6 p.m. Harry G. Leslie Day dinner. North Ballroom, Purdue Memorial Union. Postponed until spring semester. Oliver North will speak at the event, sponsored by the College Republicans.

** • Tuesday, Oct. 16. 4:30 p.m. Jewish Studies Public Lecture Series. Room 214C, Stewart Center. Ben Siegel, Department of English and Foreign Languages, California State Polytechnic University, will speak on "Simply not a Mandarin: Saul Bellow as Jew and Jewish Writer."

• Wednesday, Oct. 17. 12:30 p.m. Jewish Studies Program Noon Series. Room 318, Stewart Center. Miriam Hasson, Department of Biological Sciences, will speak on "Sephardic Life in an Ashknazic World."

• Thursday, Oct. 25. 4:30 p.m. Department of Philosophy Colloquium Series. Liberal Arts and Education Building, Room 1268. Marian David, professor of philosophy at the University of Notre Dame will present "Do Beliefs Have Their Content Essentially?"

** • Thursday, Oct. 25. 4:30 p.m. Jewish Studies Occasional Lecture Series. Room 214A, Stewart Center. Hilmar Kaiser will speak on "German Responsibility for the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1923."

EXHIBITS

• Monday Oct. 1 through Nov. 11. Purdue Galleries exhibit: "Li'l Heads." Robert L. Ringel Gallery, Purdue Memorial Union. Prints and photos of heads and portraiture from the permanent collection will be part of an interactive display. Drawing materials and a photo booth will be provided so patrons can create their own portraits to be added to the display. Opening reception 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4.

• Monday, Oct. 15 through Nov. 2. Purdue Galleries exhibit: Midwest Photography Invitational XI. Ralph G. Beelke Memorial Gallery, Creative Arts Building Two. Photographic artists from throughout the Midwest assembled in a group show, organized by the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Opening reception 4:30-6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18.

MEETINGS

• Thursday, Oct. 18. 5 p.m. Student Organization Assembly. South Ballroom, Purdue Memorial Union. Student leaders will review event planning and policies, and learn new information regarding student organizations.

OTHER

• Saturday, Oct. 6. October Break begins. Classes resume Oct. 10.
