September 28, 2001 'Rent-A-Rower' raises funds for Purdue CrewWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. It might be mowing instead of rowing, but Purdue Crew members will be doing handiwork for their annual "Rent-a-Rower" fund raiser. For $50 per rower, crew members will work up to five hours on Saturday (9/29), Sunday, Oct. 14; Sunday, Nov. 4; or Saturday, Nov. 10. Potential jobs include yard work, painting, building fences and cleaning out garages. Jeff Brown, crew vice president, says no job is too big or small. "We moved somebody's home-built grand piano once," Brown says. "It took eight crew guys to do it." The Purdue Crew has approximately 150 student-athletes ready to roll up their sleeves. "We're able-bodied people willing to work," Brown says. "We'll do all your dirty work for you that you need to get done for fall." The club plans to use the proceeds for travel and equipment. Organized in 1949, Purdue Crew is among the oldest university clubs in the United States. Members practice five days a week on the Wabash River in Greater Lafayette. Since 1981, when a new boathouse was built and university support increased, the club has won four Midwestern Championships, six Southern Championships, the Visitor's Cup Race at the San Diego Crew Classic and five Dad Vail National Championships.
