Purdue students recognized for honors, achievements

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Fourteen Purdue University students recently were recognized for their achievements.

– A senior studying animal sciences has been appointed to the Purdue University Board of Trustees. Anna Carol Day, of Noblesville, Ind., was selected from more than 50 students for the trustee position after interviews on campus and at the office of Gov. Frank O'Bannon. She attended her first meeting July 5, just three days after being appointed. Day is involved with several organizations on campus, including Mortarboard and Sigma Alpha Sorority. She also has participated in Ag Ambassadors and Animal Science Ambassadors.

– Four Indiana students have been awarded $5,000 Brenta H. Wykoff scholarships from Purdue. The recipients are Basirat Oraide Sanuth, Hammond, Erica Michelle Correll, Peru, Nicole K. Rakich, Merrillville, and Amanda Ruth Harris, Hobart. The scholarships are awarded to female graduates of Indiana high schools who exhibit academic merit.

– Six technology students from Indiana have received $1,000 George W. McNelly scholarships. The students are Mark Robert Biehl, a sophomore studying mechanical engineering technology from North Manchester; Lin Zhu, a sophomore studying computer graphics technology from Indianapolis; Tim Siukola, a sophomore studying computer graphics technology from Munster; Jacob A. Pavlak, a sophomore studying aviation technology from Michigan City; Robert C. Ault, a sophomore studying electrical engineering technology from Valparaiso; and Joseph Werner, a sophomore studying computer graphics technology from Union Mills.

The scholarships were established to honor McNelly, dean of the School of Technology from 1966-1987. The award is based on scholastic achievement after completion of one year of studies in the School of Technology.

– The Dauch Center for the Management of Manufacturing Enterprises at the Purdue School of Management has awarded $1000 scholarships to three industrial management students from Indiana. The students are Jan Elizabeth Martin, a junior from Warsaw; Jonathan Lloyd Rundle, a junior from Walkerton; and Betsy A. Weissinger, a senior from Rochester. The scholarships are provided through corporate sponsors. They are renewable up to four semesters, if a 3.0 grade point average is maintained.

Campus activities
– The Delta Delta chapter of Sigma Chi at Purdue University has received the Peterson Significant Chapter Award from the Sigma Chi Foundation, the highest honor bestowed upon an undergraduate chapter.

Award criteria include scholarship, member retention, financial stability, pledge retention, campus activities and leadership, campus and community service, faculty and alumni relations, publications, initiation and pledge programs. Along with national recognition, the chapter received a monetary contribution from the Sigma Chi Foundation to be used for counseling or tutoring.
