Hunger Banquet to raise consciousness

The Purdue Student Union Board will dramatize world hunger and raise funds for the Lafayette Food Finders Food Bank at the Hunger Banquet at 6 p.m. Wednesday (9/19) in the North Ballroom of the Purdue Memorial Union.

At the event, meals will be prepared and divided among the guests in proportions that represent the actual income levels of high, middle and low-income countries. Celebrity servers, including state Rep. Sheila Klinker, D-Lafayette, will be present.

Center receives economic education award

The Indiana Council for Economic Education has chosen the Purdue University Center for Economic Education to receive a prestigious award.

The Peter V. Harrington Center Award recognizes the center that has done the most to boost economic education and literacy in Indiana. The center specializes in training teachers to incorporate economic education into the school curriculum.

Center director Michael Watts will receive the award at the Indiana Council for Economic Excellence at an 11:45 a.m. banquet Friday, Sept. 21, at the Ritz Charles in Carmel, Ind.

Other honorees at the banquet include a bank president and 11 educators from throughout Indiana.

New 'interaction garden' to foster conversation

Purdue's newest outdoor space will be dedicated at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, as part of Family Weekend. The Martha Christine Butler Interaction Garden, located just east of Stanley Coulter Hall, features 10 cast bronze plaques set in the existing concrete walkways – each one engraved with a quote from a world figure in politics, philanthropy or the arts. The garden is a gift from Martha Butler's family in memory of the 1973 Purdue humanities graduate whose life was cut short by cancer in 1998.

Black Cultural Center sponsors day of free fun

The Black Cultural Center will present Friends and Family Day from 3-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22. Activities include live entertainment, a family feud game and Afrocentric children's activities. The event is free and open to the public.

Indiana bands to pack Ross-Ade Stadium

Thirty high school marching bands from Indiana and Illinois will visit Purdue for "All-American" Band Day, Saturday, Sept. 22. More than 2,000 musicians and auxiliary members are expected at the annual event. At halftime of the football matchup against the University of Akron, they will join together to perform music by Aerosmith, Styx and the Moody Blues.

Participating Indiana high school marching bands include: Attica, Benton Central, Bloomfield, Gary Calumet, Carroll, Caston, Indianapolis Cathedral, Churubusco, Crawfordsville, Delphi, Edison, Kankakee Valley, Knightstown, LaSalle, McCutcheon, Michigan City High School, Indianapolis North Central, North Vermillion, North White, Portage, Peru, Riverton Parke, Rochester, Shenandoah, South Vermillion, Tipton, West Central, Westview and Wheeler.

Female manufacturing president to speak

Wanda Williams, president and founder of Williams Cylinders & Controls Inc., will speak to Krannert School MBA students at the Executive Forum speakers series on Friday (9/28).

Williams will give her talk, "Taking Control of My Destiny," at 11:30 a.m. in the Krannert Auditorium. Time can be arranged for journalist interviews. Audio and video of the speech can also be made available via the Internet.

Purdue Alumni Association's Jack Karl retires

John H. "Jack" Karl will retire as senior associate director of the Purdue Alumni Association on Dec. 31 after 31 years of service.

Karl worked with thousands of Purdue alumni through the club network, for which he visited alumni across the country each spring.

Karl also coordinated the club officers' conference, served as a liaison with the athletic department, developed the Autumn Tuesday speaker program and directed the association's award program.

The John Purdue Club recently recognized Karl with its Diamond P Award, the highest honor a member can receive. The award is presented for loyalty, generosity and service to Purdue athletics.

Karl remains active within the Purdue and Greater Lafayette communities as a volunteer for the Greater Lafayette United Way and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, District 5.
