Haydn, Ravel to highlight string quartet’s performance

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Avalon String Quartet will be performing works by Haydn and Ravel as part of a 7:30 p.m. recital Thursday, Sept. 20, in Loeb Playhouse. The performance will be the first in Purdue Convocations’ 2001-2002 regular season.

Admission is $9. Tickets can be purchased at Purdue box offices or charged by phone at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW.

The quartet, consisting of violinists Blaise Magniere and Marie Wang, violist Brian Chen and cellist Sumire Kudo, formed in 1995 at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival.

Avalon String Quartet made its New York debut on the Alexander Schneider Series at the New School in 1998. The group also has performed on the Dame Myra Hess Series in Chicago, the La Jolla Chamber Music Society Series and the MIT Concert Series in Boston.

The quartet has maintained an active relationship with virtuoso Isaac Stern, who once referred to them as "a musical treasure so rarely found." Stern presented the quartet in their Carnegie Hall debut in March 2000.

The ensemble will perform three pieces during their Purdue recital. The evening will begin with Haydn’s Quartet in B Flat Major, Op. 71, No. 1, followed by String Quartet No. 5 by R. Murray Schafer. The evening will conclude with Ravel’s Quartet in F Major for strings.
