Lafayette Klezmorim to play at Jewish Studies
Program event
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. The Jewish Studies Program's annual open house is 4-6 p.m. Tuesday (8/28) in the Anniversary Drawing Room of the Purdue Memorial Union.
A local band, the Lafayette Klezmorim, will perform beginning at 5 p.m. The Klezmorim play an eclectic mix of Eastern European music, frolicking dance tunes, Israeli songs and other music styles. The band also will be playing selections from its new CD "Crossing the Bridge."
"The most characteristic aspect of Jewish music, no matter the type, is the spirit and the soul of the music, of the emotion and of being Jewish, imparted by the musician," said Neil Zimmerman, who plays the clarinet in the band. He also is an associate professor of industrial hygiene at Purdue.
The open house has become an annual Jewish Studies Program tradition.
"There will be food, entertainment, a chance to meet with Jewish Studies faculty members, and in general, an opportunity to learn more about the curricular instruction, cultural programming, and other activities that have made Jewish Studies so visible and vital a presence at Purdue," said Sandor Goodhart, program director.
The Lafayette Klezmorim originated more than 20 years ago with only three members, but has since grown. The core members are Cyrelle Simon on the piano, Hershel Krushen on the violin, Michael Forman on the flute, Herb Moskowitz, rhythm, and Neil Zimmerman, clarinet.
Some of the Klezmorim's members played in Israel this past summer.
"A part of the band was fortunate enough to be able to perform for my daughters wedding in Israel on Aug. 2," Zimmerman said. "It was an indescribable thrill to be able to bring at least a portion of our Lafayette Klezmorim sound to the hills of Galilee."
Students, faculty, staff and members of the community are invited to attend the open house.
