Purdue writing lab enjoys international use

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – People all over the world are turning to the Purdue University Writing Lab for assistance.

More than 3.6 million people from 125 countries sought help last year through the lab's Web site by downloading instructional handouts. Requests from those on campus also kept the lab busy. More than 11,000 students, faculty and staff used the Writing Lab in Heavilon Hall for one-on-one tutorials. Feedback has been positive.

"I appreciate the help your service provides," Joseph Uhl, professor of agricultural economics, said in an evaluation of the lab. "You do an excellent job with our students."

"The tutorials are great!" added Judy Rechberger, a continuing lecturer in English. "The Writing Lab provides an invaluable service to students. It is especially beneficial to our international population."

Lab director Muriel Harris says she is pleased that the lab enjoys such popularity, especially online.

"Frankly, we're amazed at the growth of our Web site," she said. "We responded to over a thousand e-mail questions about writing skills."

In addition to maintaining the Web site and offering one-on-one tutorials to student writers, Writing Lab staff also run a grammar hotline, conduct workshops and offer assistance to international students interested in improving their English writing skills. They also assist writing instructors in bringing multimedia technology to the classroom. Undergraduate peer tutors and 17 graduate students work in the lab.

The Writing Lab has received numerous national awards for excellence in instruction. Its Web site is frequently linked to other educational Web sites and cited in college textbooks. Off-campus visitors from around the world have visited the Writing Lab, which they view as a model for their own educational resources.
