Hoosier Riverwatch monitoring workshop
planned Aug. 22

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Hoosier Riverwatch will conduct a volunteer stream monitoring workshop Aug. 22 at the Ruth Lilly YMCA Camp in St. Paul, Ind. St. Paul is located southeast of Shelbyville, Ind.

The Level 1 training workshop will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The workshop will provide general education in water quality issues and introductory-level training in monitoring the health of rivers and streams through physical, chemical and biological testing. After completing the training, volunteers can perform stream tests, submit data to the statewide volunteer stream monitoring database and teach students how to monitor.

Hoosier Riverwatch, jointly sponsored by Purdue University and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources' Division of Soil Conservation, is a statewide education program that focuses on local river and stream stewardship.

"The training is for anyone interested in learning about water quality and gaining hands-on experience in monitoring rivers and streams," said Lyn Hartman, Hoosier Riverwatch coordinator.

Those interested in the environment, especially local educators, are invited to attend the workshop. "The volunteer stream monitoring program fits easily into elementary, middle and high school classes, including biology, chemistry, math, language arts and social studies," Hartman said.

The workshop is sponsored by the Ruth Lilly YMCA Camp and the Sand Creek Watershed Project/Decatur County Soil and Water Conservation District. For reservations and directions, contact the YMCA camp at (765) 525-6730. Training is free, but registration is limited to the first 24 participants. Additional Level 1 and Level 2 workshops are planned at various locations around the state through this fall.
