August 3, 2001 Biblical Hebrew courses expandWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Beginning this fall the Jewish Studies Program in the School of Liberal Arts is offering a second year of Biblical Hebrew classes. The courses are open to degree-seeking students as well as members of the community. Until this semester, only one year of study in the ancient language was available on the West Lafayette campus. All sections of Biblical Hebrew are taught by Stuart Robertson, a Presbyterian pastor with a doctorate in Hellenistic Judaism from the Annenberg Research Institute in Philadelphia. "The second year builds on the first year," Robertson said. "During the second year, we will be looking at issues of textual criticism and interpretation. We will be both translating and discussing the text and learning about the text itself." The first-year class will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 1:15 p.m. The second-year class will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30-2:45 p.m. Liberal arts majors who complete four semesters of Biblical Hebrew will be able to satisfy the foreign language requirement for their degrees. Courses in modern Hebrew, the language spoken in Israel today, also will be offered during the upcoming semester. Members of the community who are interested in registering for any of the courses should contact the Purdue Office of Admissions at (765) 494-1776. The fall semester begins Aug. 20.
