August 3, 2001 Purdue welcomes new international studentsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue University will welcome new international students to its West Lafayette campus next week in anticipation of the start of classes Aug. 20. Most international students newly enrolled in various graduate and professional programs will arrive Monday through Wednesday (8/6-8/8) for orientation. Staff from the Office of International Students and Scholars will provide shuttle service from the Purdue Airport, the Lafayette Greyhound bus station and the Lafayette Amtrak train station, said Michael Brzezinski, director of International Students and Scholars. Staff also will greet students at the Purdue Memorial Union, the drop-off point for the Lafayette Limo shuttle service from the Indianapolis International Airport. Graduate students will attend daylong orientation programs on Thursday (8/9) or Friday (8/10). Brzezinski said the goal of orientation is to provide assistance so international students feel welcomed, appreciated and as comfortable as possible. "The orientation program is geared to help students adjust to life at Purdue and the Greater Lafayette community in general," he said. "This year we also have more social and cultural programs than ever, which the students have traditionally enjoyed." A reception for the parents of international students will be at 3-4:30 p.m. Aug. 16 in the Purdue Memorial Union Anniversary Drawing Room. The students' welcome reception will begin at 7 p.m. Aug. 17 in the Purdue Memorial Union North Ballroom. Provost Sally Frost Mason will be the key speaker. Undergraduate international students will move on to campus beginning Aug. 11. Their orientation sessions will be Aug. 15. Activities for all international students will include a trip to Wolf Park in Battleground, a visit to Tippecanoe Battlefield and Prophetstown, and a shopping trip to Meijer on Aug.16. Festivities will also include traditional picnics and barbecues, along with a visit to Columbian Park on Aug. 18.
