July 3, 2001 Purdue police offer traffic tips for fireworks and concert-goersWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Because of several construction projects in the campus area, Purdue University police are reminding motorists to allow plenty of travel time to and from Greater Lafayette's July Fourth celebration at Purdue Wednesday evening (7/4). The "Stars and Stripes" concert and fireworks display, which has been held at Purdue's Slayter Center of Performing Arts since 1990, will begin at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday with the Purdue Jazz Band. The Lafayette Symphony Orchestra and other featured acts will take the stage at 7:15 p.m. The fireworks show will begin at about 9:30 p.m. The rain date is Thursday (7/5). Local media outlets will be notified if postponement becomes necessary. Purdue Police Capt. Ron Fosnaugh reminds drivers that State Street is reduced to a single lane of traffic each way from University Street to Airport Road. Both Stadium Avenue and Third Street will be closed between North Intramural Drive and McCormick Road beginning at 2 p.m. Wednesday, and Stadium Avenue will be re-opened to eastbound traffic only between North Intramural Drive and Northwestern Avenue immediately after the fireworks show. "The Lafayette, Tippecanoe County and Indiana State police departments will be working along with us and West Lafayette police to help expedite outbound traffic after the celebration," Fosnaugh said. "We ask that you please be patient and follow officers' directions so we can get you off campus as quickly as possible." Police also want eastbound motorists to be aware that a construction project has reduced Chauncey Avenue to a single lane between Wood and State streets where it passes the Chauncey Hill Mall. This will require some traffic heading back to Lafayette along this route to be diverted to South River Road. "We are anticipating a bit of a bottleneck at Chauncey Avenue and Wood Street after the fireworks and recommend that those who have the option of taking another route back into Lafayette to go ahead and do so," Fosnaugh said.
