Biotechnology seminar to explore GMO safety

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University's School of Agriculture will host a biotechnology seminar titled "Should we be worried about GMOs in our foods?" The discussion is open to the public and will be at 3:30 p.m. May 10 in the Krannert Auditorium.

The guest speaker will be Steve Taylor from the University of Nebraska. Taylor is professor and head of the Department of Food Science and Technology and director of the Food Processing Center. He has served on international panels with the Food and Agriculture Organization and World Health Organization.

Taylor will discuss the safety of genetically modified foods. He will address the safety evaluation of genetically modified crops such as Bt corn, Starlink corn and Roundup ready soybeans. He also will focus on his research on the potential allergenicity of biotech foods.

"Dr. Taylor is a leading expert in food allergens," said Marshall Martin, Purdue professor of agricultural economics. "This is a good opportunity to talk about the concerns of biotechnology and learn about food safety issues."
