To: Assignment Desk/Weekend Assignment Editors From: Jenny Pratt Date: April 5, 2001 Subject: Rube Goldberg/Bug Bowl Satellite Coordinates A highlights package from the National Rube Goldberg Machine Contest and the Purdue University Bug Bowl will be available Saturday (4/7) via satellite between 4:30 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. EST (3:30 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. in West Lafayette). We also will fax a news release Saturday afternoon. Satellite Information: SBS6/07 (74' W) Rube Goldberg: Five university teams will compete for the Rube Goldberg title. If you are unfamiliar with the contest, student teams design crazy, whimsical machines to complete common, mundane tasks. This year machines must select, clean and peel an apple in 20 steps or more. Teams will be here from University of Toledo, University of Buffalo, Vanderbilt, University of Texas at Austin (defending champs) and, of course, Purdue. The Purdue team's machine is a tribute to New York City, complete with a King Kong-ed Empire State Building. Bug Bowl: More than 5,000 people are expected for Bug Bowl, which will be Saturday and Sunday on campus. The event, just like its name implies, features creepy crawly things of all shapes and sizes. Cockroach races, a petting zoo and stir-fried surprises all await visitors this year. The shots of kids during this event are some of the best video of the year. Children really get into the hissing cockroaches crawling all over, plus diving into to slug stir fry. If you have any questions feel free to give me a call, (765) 494-2079. On Saturday, I can be reached at (765) 427-4178 (cell) or (765) 423-7326 (pager).
