NYC choreographer to work with students, community

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – New York City choreographer and dance instructor Zvi Gotheiner will be an artist in residence at Purdue University, April 2-6.

During the visit, sponsored by Purdue's Ben and Louise Klatch Jewish Endowment, Gotheiner will work with dance students, give a public presentation about his work and offer a free master class to the public.

On Wednesday, April 4, from 10:30 a.m.-noon, Gotheiner will offer a beginning modern dance master class in the Black Cultural Center, Multipurpose Room 1. The class is free and open to the public.

Also on Wednesday, Gotheiner will discuss his choreographic process and present video highlights of his work at 7 p.m. in Room 206, Stewart Center. A reception will follow. The event, part of the Klatch Jewish Arts Series, is free and open to the public.

Throughout the week, Gotheiner will work as a master artist in the Department of Visual and Performing Art's dance classes.

Gotheiner was born and raised in Israel. He began dancing at 17 and moved to New York City in 1978 on a dance scholarship from the American-Israeli Cultural Foundation. He has danced with the Joyce Trisler Dance Company, Feld Ballets/NY and the Bat-Sheva Dance Company. He directed Tamar Ramle and the Jerusalem Tamar Dance Companies in Israel and the Israeli Chamber Dance Company in New York. In 1989 he founded Zvi Gotheiner and Dancers.

The recipient of several awards and fellowships, Gotheiner has received commissions from groups including the Zurich Tanz Theater, Utah's Repertory Dance Theater and Colloquium Contemporary Dance Exchange. One of his pieces, "Other Marches," draws on his experiences in the Israeli army, and another pays tribute to Yemenite culture and its influence on Israeli society.

In New York, Gotheiner serves as a company teacher for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre and teaches at his own studio, 550 Broadway Dance.

Gotheiner's visit also is sponsored by the Department of Visual and Performing Arts' dance division, the Klatch family and the Jewish Studies Program.
