Guitar virtuoso Leo Kottke to perform at Loeb Playhouse

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Innovative guitar virtuoso Leo Kottke will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 8, in Loeb Playhouse.

Admission is $20 for general public, and $15 for Purdue students. Tickets can be purchased at Purdue box offices or charged by phone at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW. Kottke is presented by Purdue Convocations.

Well known among aficionados of fine guitar playing, Kottke is a self-taught guitarist who has made his mark both on stage and in his compositions.

Born in Georgia, Kottke started out playing the trombone and violin. He said when he discovered guitar, he knew he would play it for the rest of his life.

"I learned to play guitar when I was 11," he said. "The first chord I had was an E chord. I played it over and over for two weeks; I'd just strum it and let it ring out. It sent me right out of this world. I'm still like that."

With his 1968 debut album, "Twelve String Blues," and his groundbreaking 1969 album, "6- and 12-String Guitar," Kottke established himself as one of the nation's foremost acoustic guitar soloists.

Kottke’s concerts are a mix of his guitar compositions and humorous stories from his experiences in the music business.

Kottke has recorded 24 albums in the last 30 years, and is known for the songs, "Vaseline Machine Gun," "Pamela Brown," and "Louise." He has worked with many major artists including Lyle Lovett, Rickie Lee Jones, the Violent Femmes and John Gorka. Kottke is a member of Guitar Player Magazine’s Hall of Fame.

His latest album, "One Guitar, No Vocals," was released on the Private Music label in 1999.
