MTV to sponsor 'Fight for Your Rights'
activities at Purdue
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. MTV is challenging everyone in the Greater Lafayette community to "Fight for Your Rights" when it comes to hate crimes and discrimination.
The network, in conjunction with Boiler Television, the Purdue Student Union Board, St. Thomas Aquinas Center and University Residences, is sponsoring an exclusive screening of MTV's "The Matthew Shepard Story" followed by a discussion on hate crimes and discrimination. A representative from the Anti-Defamation League of Chicago will facilitate the discussion.
The event is free and open to the public and will start at 6:30 p.m. Thursday (2/22) in Stewart Center, Room 302.
"It's exciting that MTV is willing to partner with Purdue to help make this event happen," said Jay Mermoud, manager of Boiler Television. "MTV is allowing us to screen the film and host the discussion, which will help raise the awareness of hate crimes in students and the community."
These activities are planned in conjunction with the Wednesday (2/21) candlelight vigil and lecture by Judy Shepard, whose son, Matthew, was murdered in 1998 because of his homosexuality. The vigil will be at 7:30 p.m. on the Purdue Memorial Union front lawn. Shepard's lecture will be at 8 p.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Center, 535 West State St., West Lafayette.
"Fight For Your Rights" is a yearlong program created by MTV to encourage individuals to take a stand against discrimination. In addition to diversity workshops across the country and six special television programs, MTV helped compile a comprehensive list of civil rights organizations and volunteer opportunities at its Web site.
