The Corigliano Quartet is dedicated to the presentation of new American music in tandem with the standard string quartet repertoire. The quartet was founded in 1996 with the blessing of its namesake, composer John Corigliano. "I was, frankly, knocked out by their performance of my string quartet," said the composer. "It was music-making of the highest order, and I predict that this world-class quartet will be known to more and more music lovers in the near future." Composed of violinists Michael Jinsoo Lim and Lina Bahn, violist Melia Watras and cellist Jeffrey Ziegler, the Corigliano Quartet won the grand prize at the 1999 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition. In its brief history, the group has performed in many of the nations leading concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, Weill Recital Hall and the Kennedy Center. After their 1997 Carnegie Hall performance, the New York Times called them "Musicians who seem to say Listen to this!" and described them as having "an excellent, smooth sense of ensemble, but with each part vigorously alive." The Corigliano Quartet currently serves on the faculty of Indiana Universitys School of Music as visiting lecturers. The four members also serve as the schools quartet-in-residence, a position created especially for them. The group initially formed while its members were students at IU. In addition to works by Corigliano, the quartet's performance will include the music of Haydn and Dvorak. CONTACT: Larry Sommers, Purdue Convocations, (765) 494-5045, lsommers@purdue.edu.
