Counseling Services receives accreditation
for intern program
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue announced today (1/19) that, after a four-year process, Counseling and Psychological Services' Pre-Doctoral Internship in Professional Psychology has received accreditation from the American Psychological Association.
"This accreditation puts CAPS on par at a national and international level with other major university and college counseling centers," said Barry Schreier, training coordinator for the center. "Accreditation by the APA will allow CAPS to attract doctoral level psychology students from around the country and world."
The internship program is the final stage for doctoral students completing their degrees the equivalent of a medical residency. Students from around the country enroll in Purdue's program for one year to train for entry-level professional practice.
For the accreditation, the APA examined different components of the program including the program's philosophy, resources, cultural and individual difference and diversity, intern/staff relations, self-assessment and quality enhancement, and the relationship with the accrediting body.
Susan F. Zlotlow, director of APA's office of program consultation and accreditation, said the accreditation committee expressed its appreciation for the center's commitment to developing and maintaining the best possible quality of graduate education and training in psychology.
CAPS was formed in 1991 when the mental health unit of the health center was merged with Department of Psychology's psychological services.
