Purdue honors students for achievementsNOTE TO JOURNALISTS: Enclosed is information about a student from your readership area.WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Fourteen Purdue University students recently were recognized for their achievements.-- Eric Steiner, of Berne, Ind., won the annual Young Farmer Discussion Meet at the Indiana Farm Bureau state convention earlier this month. A senior in the School of Agriculture, Steiner discussed the Internet and its role in agriculture. He will travel to Orlando, Fla., to compete in the American Farm Bureau Federation discussion meet finals Jan. 7-10. -- Purdue University Bands presented eight Indiana students with awards for fall 2000: Tim VanTornhout, a senior snare drum player majoring in mechanical engineering technology from Mishawaka , received the Maxine Lefever Outstanding Percussionist Award; Gavin Jones, a freshman trumpet player majoring in engineering from Elkhart, received the Arthur and Nancy Hansen Outstanding Marching Freshman Award; Kristofor Gibson, a senior trumpet player majoring in electrical engineering from Georgetown , received the Outstanding Marching Band Member Award and the Henry R. Evans Outstanding Upperclassman Trumpet Award; Theodore Stevens, a junior tuba player majoring in health and safety education from Logansport , received the Gary Cummings Outstanding Bassman Award; Ryan Hicks, a freshman piano player majoring in engineering from Fort Wayne , received the Outstanding Jazz Band Member Award; Brett Musick, a junior trombone player majoring in mechanical engineering from Lafayette , received the Paul Towner Outstanding Trombonist Award; Elizabeth Fletcher, a flag corps member and junior majoring in computer science from Lawrenceburg , received the Outstanding Flag Corps Member Award; Edward Moy, a sophomore violinist and concertmaster from Indianapolis , received the Outstanding Purdue Symphony Orchestra Member Award; and Alex Kovach, a freshman trumpet player majoring in engineering from Greenwood , received the Outstanding Symphonic Band Member Award. -- Purdue's School of Technology awarded three Indiana students the 2000-2001 George W. McNelly Scholarship, a one-time monetary prize of $1,000. The scholarship, established to honor George W. McNelly, dean of the School of Technology from 1966-1987, is based on scholastic achievement after completion of one year of any one of the curriculum in the School of Technology. The award recipients are Mark Fernandes of Kokomo , a sophomore majoring in electrical engineering technology; Nathan Scott Tucker of Arlington , a sophomore majoring in aviation flight technology; and Benjamin E. Ruf of Fort Wayne , a sophomore majoring in computer technology. -- Purdue pharmacy students Amy M. Brown of Princeton, Ind. , and Yogesh P. Patel of Lafayette, have won $2,000 scholarships from Mallinckrodt Inc., a pharmaceutical company based in St. Louis. The scholarships are awarded on the basis academic achievement and performance in a nuclear pharmacy summer internship program.
