JOURNALISTS: Here is a chronology of events of interest to journalists in conjunction with Purdue's appearance in the 2001 Rose Bowl on New Year's Day. All times listed are subject to change.

Friday, Dec. 22

Mishawaka alum helps band pack

Students will start loading the equipment for the 320-member Purdue "All American" Marching Band – tubas and trombones, cymbals and batons, and even the "World's Largest Drum" – at approximately 3:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22, for a cross-country road trip to Pasadena. The loading should take about an hour, with the 600-pound, 10-foot drum boarding last, at the Elliott Hall of Music. For the fourth time in as many years, former band member David Martin, of Martin Moving & Storage in Mishawaka, will tackle the moving task. Martin, along with his wife, will celebrate Christmas on the road as they drive the equipment in a 48-foot trailer for the bowl-bound Boilers. Boilers depart for Pasadena

The Boilermaker football team will fly to Los Angeles in two planes, which will leave the Purdue airport on Saturday afternoon. The first group (coaching staff, two-deep roster, key support personnel) will leave at 2 p.m. The second group (with the remainder of the team and support personnel) will leave between 2:45 p.m. and 3 p.m. The team will be staying in the Park Hyatt Hotel. The first news conference is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. PST at the Park Hyatt. The media facilities and all other news conferences will be at the nearby Century Plaza Hotel. The team will practice in the Los Angeles Coliseum.

 

Tuesday, Dec. 26

Team visits Disneyland

Purdue football team members will march in the 3:30 p.m. parade at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., and then selected team members will speak to the media. After that, all the players and coaching staff will be free to enjoy the theme park. Journalists who are covering the event should report to the media check-in desk at the park entrance and show business identification, such as a business card or press card. Wednesday, Dec. 27

Team members visit City of Hope

Six team members and coach Joe Tiller will visit with children who are patients at City of Hope National Medical Center/Beckman Research Institute, a cancer hospital, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The center is located at 1500 E. Duarte Road, Duarte, Calif. CONTACT: Taylor Mayo (626) 301-8217.

 

Thursday, Dec. 28

Marching band flies to California

About 320 members of the Purdue "All American" Marching Band and auxiliary units will board buses at 11:30 a.m. at Elliott Hall of Music for their trip to the Indianapolis International Airport. At 2 p.m. they will board a chartered Omni Air International DC-10 (Gate TBA), arriving about 3:30 p.m. (PST) in Los Angeles. The band members expect to unload their equipment from a truck at 7 p.m. at the Doubletree Guest Suites, 1707 Fourth St., Santa Monica, Calif. The band will rehearse 7:30-9:30 p.m. at Santa Monica High School, across from the Doubletree. Friday, Dec. 29

Band rehearses, then performs at Disneyland

Full band rehearsal 9-11:30 a.m. at Santa Monica High School, which is across from the Doubletree Hotel, where the band is staying. The band will march down Disneyland's Main Street USA at 3:30 p.m., immediately followed by a concert in an area of the park yet to be determined. Disneyland is located in Anaheim, Calif. First major wave of fans arrives in Pasadena

The first wave of fans who are part of the Purdue Alumni Association tour will load onto buses beginning at 4 a.m. at the Grant Street Parking Garage, arriving Indianapolis beginning about 7 a.m. They will then board planes throughout the day for Los Angeles. They will be staying in Los Angeles area hotels that include: The Westin Century Plaza Hotel & Tower, Park Hyatt Los Angeles, Renaissance Beverly Hills, Omni Los Angeles Hotel, Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel, Fairmont Miramar Santa Monica; St. Regis, Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel, Regal Biltmore Hotel, and Wilshire Grand Hotel and Suites.

 

Saturday, Dec. 30

Fans back Boiler b'ball team from California

Purdue fans will meet at 9 a.m. in the Los Angeles Ballroom, Century Plaza Hotel, to watch the television broadcast of the Purdue vs. UCLA men's basketball game in Mackey Arena. At 11 a.m., they will watch the Boilermaker women take on Michigan at Ann Arbor. The event is sponsored by the John Purdue Club but is open to all Purdue fans.

Band to perform for CBS, tour floats

The band will march at 10:30-11:30 a.m. in the Rose Bowl Stadium for the videotaped CBS special, "Coming Up Roses," to be broadcast New Year's Day. Band members will then tour float decorating areas just outside the stadium.

Fans fire up at outdoor rally

Purdue fans will join for their first pep rally in California at 4 p.m. outdoors at the ABC Entertainment Center in Century City, adjacent to the Century Plaza Hotel. Coach Joe Tiller, the coaching staff and all the players, the Pep Band, Boilermaker Special, Purdue Pete, twirlers, flag corps and cheerleaders will be at the rally.

Purdue schools host alumni receptions

Most Purdue schools will sponsor special events for their alumni. For details on the Web see:

Sunday, New Year's Eve, Dec. 31

Glee Club sings at Crystal Cathedral

The Purdue Musical Organizations' Glee Club will perform 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. during services at the Crystal Cathedral services, 13280 Chapman Ave., in Garden Grove, Calif.

Band performs at Santa Monica Pier

A portion of the "All American" Marching Band will perform at 11 a.m. at the Santa Monica pier.

Kickoff lunch

Purdue fans will meet with community leaders for a kick-off lunch beginning at noon in parking area K, southeast of the Rose Bowl stadium. Purdue's Pep Band will perform. Hall of Fame awards will be given. Coach Joe Tiller and quarterback Drew Brees will attend.

Boilers bring in New Year at Universal, parties

The "All American" Marching band, cheerleaders, Purdue Pete and Rowdy will join Purdue fans at Universal Studios Hollywood for one of several Purdue New Year's Eve celebrations planned in that area. Monday, New Year's Day, Jan. 1

Parade of Roses

The "All American" Marching Band will perform as Unit 39 in 112th Parade of Roses. The band will be marching behind the Big Ten float , which will be shaped as a Purdue helmet. The band will play "Hail Purdue," "Back Home Again in Indiana," "Horse," and "Final Countdown." More than 150,000 people are expected to have seats to watch the parade, and 35 million are expected in the television audience. The Purdue fans traveling with the alumni association will be seated near the parade's starting point . The parade will begin at 8 a.m. PST, 11 a.m. ET, and will include 52 floats, 24 bands and 27 equestrian units. Pregame celebration

Purdue fans will get fired up at a pregame party in Jackie Robinson Field, east of the Rose Bowl stadium on the east side of Seco Street. Gates open for admission to the Rose Bowl game at noon. Pregame activities begin at 1:30 p.m. Kickoff is no earlier than 2 p.m.

Postgame celebration

A brief fireworks display is scheduled, originating from the north end of the stadium. After the fireworks, the game trophy will be presented on risers located at the north 20-yard line.

Band departs for home

The band will depart from the Los Angeles airport shortly after the game, arriving in Indianapolis at 6 a.m. The band then will board buses bound for Purdue. Tuesday, Jan. 2

Boilermaker team planes return to Purdue

The team charter planes will leave the Los Angeles Airport at 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. The entire team will not return on the charter, however, because many of the players will take commercial flights to their own home areas to finish celebrating the holidays. Team planes are expected to arrive at the Purdue Airport at approximately 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
