Purdue students organize rally
for football clash with IU

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Boilermaker students and fans will celebrate the season and fire up for the Old Oaken Bucket game at a pep rally starting 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, at Slayter Center.

Seven student groups are sponsoring the rally and a sheet decorating contest, with the winner to be announced at the event, said Brenda Shea, chief of staff of Purdue Student Government.

"We had such a good turnout for the rally we organized for homecoming, and school spirit is running so high, that we thought everyone would want to celebrate and get fired up for the Bucket game," Shea said. "We decided this time, though, that we should have it on a Thursday instead of a Friday night because many of the students have friends coming in Friday for the weekend and will have other plans."

For the sheet contest, there will be several categories for various housing units and clubs, she said, including Greeks, residence halls, co-ops and off-campus students.

Purdue Pete, Rowdy, cheerleaders, the Boilermaker Special and other celebrities will join the Purdue "All-American" Marching Band's pep band for the event.

"We plan to have the Boilermaker Special run around campus calling everyone to the rally and offering free rides," said Kendra Baratta, representing the Purdue Reamer's Club, which operates the train.

Free popcorn and beverages will be provided by the Office of Housing and Food Services.

Purdue will take on the Indiana University Hoosiers Saturday, Nov. 18, in Ross-Ade Stadium. Kickoff will be at 12:10 p.m.

The two teams will be playing for the Old Oaken Bucket, one of the oldest football trophies in the nation. While the presentation of the trophy dates back 75 years, the bucket itself is more than 100 years old.

Event sponsors include Purdue Student Government, Purdue Student Union Board, Purdue Foundation Student Board, the Reamers Club, Purdue Alumni Association Student Ambassadors, the Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association. Groups interested in taking part in the sheet decorating contest should contact Purdue Student Government for more information.
