October 13, 2000 Ag School offers scholarships to incoming freshmenWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. High-school seniors interested in attending Purdue University's School of Agriculture next fall may apply for more than 100 scholarships awarded to incoming freshman. Selection for the majority of scholarships is based on academic merit. Students graduating in the top 5 percent of their class and having an SAT score of 1,250 or higher or a minimum ACT score of 28 automatically receive a $1,500 Award of Excellence. According to Thomas Atkinson, assistant to the director of academic programs, there is a diversity of scholarships offered to incoming School of Agriculture freshmen. "For example, some scholarships are for students from particular counties. One is for students with distinguished backgrounds in high-school agricultural education and one is for sons and daughters of Indiana farmers," he said. Last year, 196 students applied for scholarships and 102 were offered awards. Purdue's annual cost is estimated at $11,652 for Indiana residents and $20,774 for non-residents. "Our School of Agriculture scholarships reward academic excellence achieved during high school and recognize top incoming students for their accomplishments making it possible for students to take smaller loans or to work fewer hours during the school year," Atkinson said. The Mauri Williamson Scholarship provides a $3,000 award for the freshman year, renewable for an additional three years. To be eligible, a student must rank in the top 5 percent of their high-school class, have a minimum SAT score of 1,300 or a minimum ACT score of 29. To apply for the award or get more information, visit the School of Agriculture Academic Program's Web page at https://www.agriculture.purdue.edu/oap/future.html. Click on "Scholarships," then "2001 Freshman Scholarship Application." The application, due by Feb. 15, can be completed on-screen, printed and then mailed to the university with the applicant's high-school transcript and a short essay.
