Western Opera Theatre presents Die Fledermaus

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Convocations will present Western Opera Theatre's production of the comic opera "Die Fledermaus" at 8 p.m. Oct. 21 at Elliott Hall of Music.

Single tickets are $21 to $33 for the general public and $12 to $17 for Purdue students. Tickets are available at Purdue box offices or by calling (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW.

"Die Fledermaus," which takes place in 19th century Vienna, is a light tale filled with mistaken identities, misadventures and revenge. The revenge plot involves a ball and a bat costume, which is how the opera earned its title "Die Fledermaus," or "The Bat." The score by Johann Strauss premiered in Vienna in 1874.

The Western Opera Theatre's production is directed by Josemaria Condemi, and conducted by Mark Morash and Steven Osgood. Playing the leads are Ryan MacPherson as Alfred, Lauren Skuce as Adele, Caroline Worra as Rosalinda, and Justin Vickers as Eisenstein. The score is sung and supertitled in English.

Western Opera Theatre, the touring division of the San Francisco Opera, was formed in 1967 and has performed 2,725 times in its 33 years of touring. The company was the first American opera company to tour the People's Republic of China and has since become the most active touring opera in the Pacific rim.

"Die Fledermaus" is presented by Purdue Convocations as part of the Lively Arts Series.
