Weeks: 7/25/00 - 8/16/00 For additional information, call (765) 494-8396 July 25: 2000 Midwest Regional Turf Field DaySports turf managers, lawn care professionals and golf course operators can share tips with Purdue experts on keeping grass healthy in spite of cleats, insects and disease. The field day is scheduled to run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Purdue's W.H. Daniel Turfgrass Research and Diagnostic Center. The center is located at 1340 Cherry Lane, near the West Lafayette campus and adjacent to the Purdue Kampen Golf Course. In the morning, participants can choose between three test plot tours. Other topics to be covered include alternatives to athletic turf, field painting, fairway renovation, bentgrass cultivars for greens, and applying herbicides and pesticides. An afternoon workshop will be devoted to the grass-root eating and lawn-destroying white grub, a.k.a. the Japanese beetle larva. The event also includes a trade show, equipment demonstration and irrigation management workshop. Registration fee for members of the Midwest Regional Turf Foundation is $25. July 27-29: 2000 Indy International Wine CompetitionAmateur or commercial wine makers can enter their products to be judged in this annual event. With more than 2,500 entries this year, Indianapolis plays host to one of the largest and most respected international wine competitions in America. On the Indiana State Fairgrounds, wines compete in more than 70 different categories in the Farm Bureau Building. Wines may be made from any fruit, berry, vegetable or honey ingredients. The judging is free and open to the public. Journalists can cover the event and taste wines along with the judges. Entry cost for amateurs is $10 per wine. Commercial wine entries are $25 per wine. Entry forms, fees and wine must be received prior to July 15. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be presented at the Taste of Indiana Reception on Aug. 3. The evening starts at 6 p.m. (note time change) in the Farm Bureau Building. Reception tickets can be purchased for $15 by calling the State Fair ticket office at (317) 927-1482 or at the door. August 3: Taste Of Indiana ReceptionThe evening runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Farm Bureau Building at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be presented to the winners of the 2000 Indy International Wine Competition (see previous item). The "Winningest" Indiana vintner will receive the Governor's trophy. The Best of Show will be awarded the American Airlines trophy. With music, rides, food, dancing and animals, this long time Hoosier tradition is fun for the whole family. Discount tickets can be purchased for $4 at Marsh Supermarkets, CVS/pharmacies, Union Federal Bank, the Marten House Hotel and all county Farm Bureau offices. August 12: 4-H Day At The Indiana State Fair4-H adult leaders will be recognized in the Farm Bureau Building auditorium at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. The program will begin at 9:30 a.m. with registration at the west door. Qualifying 4-H leaders will receive a special recognition ribbon to wear throughout the day. Other 4-H activities located in the Farm Bureau Building include the State 4-H Fashion Revue at 1 p.m.; the 4-H Youth Congress finalist trip winners at 2:30 p.m.; and the 4-H rabbit awards at 3:30 p.m. 4-H Youth Action demonstrations will run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the 4-H Exhibit Hall. At the Marsh Ag/Hort Building stage, the 4-H public speaking contest will last all day. August 16: Farmer'S Day At The Indiana State FairFarmers will gather at the fair to share in Indiana's rich agricultural history. The Farmer's Day Parade will start at 10 a.m. near the Marsh Grandstand. Special Farmer's Day activities will run from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. in the Union Federal Bank Southwest Pavilion (senior citizen's building). A celebrity milking contest will take place at 11:30 a.m. in the Livestock Nursery presented by Toyota.
