Appointments and promotions:

-- W. Dale Compton, the Lillian M. Gilbreth Distinguished Professor of Industrial Engineering, has been named to a four-year term as home secretary of the National Academy of Engineering. Compton was elected to the academy in 1981. Before joining the Purdue faculty in 1988, he spent two years at the academy as its first senior fellow. Before that, he was vice president of research at Ford Motor Co.

-- Dale DeYoung has been promoted to lieutenant of "C" shift at the Purdue Fire Department. DeYoung joined the department in 1990. He is a 14-year veteran of the Indiana National Guard, rising to the rank of captain, and a 1982 Purdue graduate with a bachelor's degree in agronomy. Also, Jefferson F. Howells and Eric C. Williams have been appointed firefighters with the department. Howells, from West Lafayette , is a 1997 Purdue graduate in organizational leadership and supervision. He previously was affiliated with C.P. Morgan residential builders of Carmel, Ind. Williams, from Monon, Ind. , formerly was a quality manager at Girtz Industries.

Alumni honors:

-- Two Hoosiers are among the eight new recipients of Distinguished Agricultural Alumni Awards from Purdue's School of Agriculture. They are D. William Biddle of Remington , who operates a 2,200-acre seed farm in Benton County with his two sons and is president of both Biddle Seeds Inc. and Biddle Insurance Service, which he founded in 1986, and Sue A. Shadley of Indianapolis, who is a founding partner in the law firm of Plews Shadley Racher & Dunn, an Indianapolis firm with 22 attorneys specializing in environmental law. The other recipients are Mark W. Bitz, Baldwinsville, N.Y., president and general manager of Plainville Farms; Ronald P. Cantrell, Makati City, Philippines, director general of the International Rice Research Institute, Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines; Barbara Chattin, Arlington, Va., deputy assistant United States trade representative; J.B. Penn, McLean, Va., senior vice president and head of the Washington, D.C., office of Sparks Cos. Inc., an agricultural information and economic consulting company; Kenneth L. Schwab, Shreveport, La., president of Centenary College in Shreveport; and Marion P. Williams, Sudbury, Mass., senior vice president for technology of Welch Foods Inc., in Concord, Mass.
