U.S. News ranks Purdue engineering
grad programs in top 10
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue University graduate engineering programs were ranked third in the country by employers and ninth overall in a U.S. News and World Report survey released today (Friday, 3/31).
In a specialty ranking, several of Purdue's individual Schools of Engineering were rated in the top 10 by deans of prominent engineering schools across the nation. Those rankings for Purdue were:
School of Industrial Engineering, third.
School of Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering, sixth.
School of Civil Engineering, seventh.
School of Mechanical Engineering, seventh.
School of Nuclear Engineering, eighth.
School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, ninth.
"Of course we are very pleased to be ranked among the top graduate programs in the country, and I am particularly gratified that the employers of our students ranked us third in the nation," said Richard J. Schwartz, dean of the Schools of Engineering. "It doesn't surprise me that six of our individual schools also ranked within the top 10, as Purdue is a well-known leader in the field of engineering education. Our outstanding reputation for high standards is strengthened by our commitment to invest and expand our Schools of Engineering."
The university recently announced a $200 million upgrade in its engineering program. The expansion will increase the university's current engineering space of 580,000 square feet by nearly 325,000 square feet and will allow more industrial-scale experiments and interdisciplinary team projects.
The expansion includes substantial growth in nanoscale technology, testing facilities in civil engineering, laboratories in mechanical engineering, development of a new biomedical engineering undergraduate program, and continued overall growth of the graduate program.
Purdue has been awarding engineering degrees since 1878. The university's Schools of Engineering are among the largest in the United States, with a faculty of about 265, and undergraduate enrollment of more than 6,100. Enrollment in graduate engineering programs increased about 17 percent this year, to 1,925. The university also has graduated more women in its engineering program than any other university in the nation.
The magazine ranks 219 of the nation's graduate engineering programs based these factors: 40 percent on reputation, 25 percent on faculty resources, 25 percent on research activity, and 10 percent on student selectivity. The overall ranking is determined by points awarded in those categories, with the top school receiving 100 percent.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology was ranked first overall for the 12th year, followed by Stanford University and the University of California at Berkeley.
The list of "America's Best Graduate Schools" appears in the April 10 issue of the magazine, available on newsstands Monday (4/3). Full rankings, methodology and related articles also will be available at U.S. News Online.
